Adding a trailer hitch to base 4xe?

Has anyone done this? And did you install it yourself or have someone do it? Part numbers?

Thanks

I bought off Amazon the Tyger Auto hitch and easily installed it myself in around 20 minutes. My ‘22 Wrangler 4xe had the L-shaped support bracket and it took a little time figuring that out but nothing too difficult. There are YouTube’s out there to watch.

I believe he is looking for a hitch for the GC 4xe.

I installed towing at the dealer in my base GC 4xe. Cost me a bit over $2k for the receiver, harness, and labor. Took them over two weeks to get the right harness. They had to get updated installation instructions from Mopar Engineering for the 4xe. You will only have 3500lb max towing. Only factory towing gets the full 6000lbs. I think that is mostly due to the lack of air suspension in the rear with the Base to handle higher tongue weights . Not sure if the 4xe also gets a bigger alternator and more cooling like the ICE. I am fine with 3500lb as my Airstream maxes out at 2500lb.

If I recall correctly, 4xes don't have an alternator. We do get the heavy duty suspension (not the air suspension in the Base, but still heavy duty). Not sure about extra cooling.

Correct. No alternators on 4xes
Still waiting for my harness to come in for a dealer install (not messing with thee 7-pin harness myself), but have considered the Uhall/DIY approach as the 3500# set up with the 4- pin harness. That would work for my needs and save lots of cash. Dealer quote is just under $2k installed.

Has anyone with the base that added the OEM setup given thought to self leveling shocks for load handling? I think that would address hitch weigh and give peace of mind for towing up to 6,000 lbs on flat terrain. If I ever tow heavy I'm going to be watching the accessory gauges. (But I don't think this is the right drivetrain to tow heavy out west in the Rockies even if towing is setup at the factory.)
Thought about airbags, but doesn't seem to be necessarily. At 350# on the hitch, I'm not seeing too much squat. If I was towing heavier, I'd probably use a weight distributing hitch anyway. So load leveling suspension probably wouldn't be much use. I did need the 7-way harness for brakes in the airstream. My old Audi Q5 3 liter diesel was a better towing vehicle than the 4xe GC. I got about 20mpg in the Audi vs 15mpg in the 4xe with the battery depleted while towing, but diesel is still staying expensive in the PNW.

Make sure your dealer is clear on the instructions for the wire harness in the 4xe. They are different than the Ice models. Techs at my dealership got confused and tried to tell me the harness was not compatible when they were just missing the correct instructions.

Keep in mind, we do have the heavy duty suspension as standard even in the Base model. That might be helping with the sag.
I got the receiver and wire harness from etrailer.com. Have not installed yet, but looks good. Replaces the rear bumper inner structure, so bumper cover has to come off to install.

It's intresting to see that no one wants to confirm that these for the 4xe specifically, but I have yet to see any real difference in the rear bumper vs the ICE models.

I'm assuming the rear bumper/hitch is the same for all GC models.

Yes the 4Xe OEM Class IV hitch is rated up to 600# tongue weight, so you would assume the air suspension is configured to handle that.

In the etrailer comments for this receiver #, at least one comment is installed on a 4xe.

The heaviest I tow is a 2,000 lb teardrop trailer, so I opted for the base 4xe. Only after the fact did I learn that a dealer installed hitch is $1900 and requires removal of fascia on the inside of the brand new car.

The problem with the uhaul route for me is I think they can only do a 4-pin connector which would rob me of my trailer brakes.

So no good solution that I can tell.
I think Jeep derates the the towing capacity in the base to upsell into higher trims. There should be a path to get to 6000# if you need it. It was still cheaper to install towing and put the wheels/tires I wanted than going for the Trailhawk.

Don you know the part number for the wiring harness? Ordering from Mopar online and want to be sure I’m right. Called my dealer and they were no help.
Did the Wrangler Tyger. Important note. Make sure stock bolts go back through the same holes you pulled them from. Yes the additional two bolts provided for the 4 total bolt mount look similar, they are very resistant to threading that final half inch if you mix them up. Had a decent workout correcting my work. No permanent damage.

Wrangler install is completely different than Grand Cherokee.
