Engine light is on again the SAME day I picked up my Wrangler 4XE for servicing

Howdy All,

I've never been on a Jeep forum before, but I've been browsing this one the past week or so due to some issues I've had with my vehicle to hopefully get some insight or relate to others with the same problems. I bought my Wrangler 4XE Sahara back in June. It's a March production model. I've absolutely been loving it even though I miss some things about my FJ Cruiser :p.

I drove to Dallas and back from Austin on Thanksgiving with no hiccups. The next day, I started my Wrangler to head home from the grocery and the engine kicked on immediately despite having a relatively high charge percent. Figured it was a software glitch, switched to e-save and moved on. CEL came on 3 mins from home at around 7600 miles. Damn. Local dealership was able to get me in this past Thursday. They fixed the recall that was out, retorqued the lower ball joint nuts (an issue I had no idea was there), and did several software updates. They told me that the CEL code was P0C74-00 "Coolant pump stored," and that after the updates and a drive test the CEL did not come back on so I was good. Picked it up yesterday.

Fueled up after getting it back, noticed a gas smell later in the day towards the back left rear of the vehicle. I figured I may have gotten gas on the jeep when fueling and didn't think anything of it. That night after a bunch of driving, the CEL came back on heading home, so I checked the gas cap when I stopped. It was loose so I tightened it, but the light has not gone away after driving ~20 miles today. I'm not having the same initial issue of the engine kicking on during startup or anything, nor any other issues it seems. I thought I noticed a slight decrease in MPG, but this could just be paranoia.

I'm obviously going to get it back to the dealer asap, but does anyone have any insight on the issue or a similar problem(s)? I've read so many horror stories here, so I'm getting anxious about not having a car to drive home and see family for the holidays due to dealers not giving out loaners. Also just disappointed about the reliability on my first brand new car ever. Thanks!

Did you line up the threads for the gas cap? The tank is pressurized so if it’s not seated properly it throws a CEL. It happened to me 2 months ago. I took it to the dealer they found it was the cap and cleared the light. It may clear on its own. Check though that the fat and thin notches are lined up with their openings and turned till it clicks. Then pull on the cap. If it stays it was put on correctly.

Yeah I double and tripled checked the threading to make sure it was good this morning to no avail.
I just had a similar thing happen - 5,600 miles and the CEL comes on. Took it to the dealership and they diagnosed it as coolant pump and said they needed to order the pump to replace it. I took a loaner and have been waiting a week for the part to arrive. No indication yes as to when they are going to get it.
Do you know how they dealt with CEL for the coolant pump? Did they change your pump out? Did they just clear and reset some software? If they did change out the part do you know if they had the part on site? I am getting the sense it is hard to get this part as my dealership can’t seem to come up with one. Also, it seems like a bunch of people are having this coolant pump issue…
Ok, just fixing the cap though will not clear the light. It may clear after a number of miles or it may need to be actually cleared through the dealer’s tool or a 3rd party tool. I’d suggest everyone getting their own diagnostic tool to atleast read codes.

So they only mentioned that the code was thrown for the coolant pump. They thought it was a bad report because it resolved after the software updates the vehicle received.

Are you experiencing any noticeable changes to performance, drivability, normality, etc with the issue on your wrangler? As I mentioned in my initial post, nothing seems out of the ordinary other than the CEL being on.

That's what I thought... Going to take it in ASAP and get it cleared. Hopefully it's a nothing burger. I thought about getting a reader, but I changed my mind since it's a brand new vehicle covered under warranty. Once I get some decent miles on it I'll definitely look at getting one.

It was acting strange for a couple of days before the CEL - it would use the engine more than usual and I could definitely hear a loud fan at times. I figured it had something to do with the engine needing to be on to heat the car as the weather recently turned cold here. When I took it to dealership, they told me I could continue to drive it until the pump came in. I chose not to based on advice from this forum. Search “coolant pump” and you’ll see an exchange I started the other day. I’m just curious as to why that code would warrant a pump replacement for some and a software reset for others.

Oh, I think I saw your post actually. I don't think the code itself warranted a software update. It's more (this is my assumption) the dealer wanted to make sure the vehicle was fully up to date before addressing any potential issues. I'll do my best to remember in my bombardment of WTFs to ask them tomorrow why they didn't investigate the coolant pump further after seeing the code. I'll probably get the "we drive tested it, and it didn't reappear" response though.

Still hoping that's not the issue. Considering I haven't noticed any negative incidents or irregularities, I'm thinking it's not🤞.

Thanks for responding. I think that the coolant pump and perhaps related software code are becoming a problem for the 4xe. This comes from nothing more than reading the forums and dealing with the issue myself. In my mind, the course of action by the dealers seems to be a bit inconsistent. I’ll let you know if I hear anything from my dealer over the next couple of days. If you hear anything interesting from yours, I’d love to hear it. Especially if that CEL is once again related to the coolant pump.

I called my dealership and they told me they couldn’t get me in till after Christmas but would read the CEL codes for me. Just got in line to get them checked, and one of the service managers was kind enough to force me in, so hopefully he’ll be able to work on it soon and get things done.

You’ll never guess what they found… Coolant Pump B Fault🤦‍♂️. Fingers crossed and prayers out that it’ll be done before Christmas if they have the part(s) and labor available. Really want to be able to drive home this Christmas.

I get the sense that we are in the same boat - or at least in line for the same pump that is probably on a boat somewhere. I'll let you know if I make any progress or learn anything interesting.
On a side note, that Sarge Green looks damn nice :sneaky:

Thanks! Ever since I was a teenager I wanted a Wrangler in this color or the tan. The superfluous parts of Jeep ownership have been pretty rad, so I can give FCA that at least. That's about it for now though lmao- really hope the issues clear up with enough recalls, etc to make this my 10 year baby.
...

If anything, new cars can be worse than pre-owned. Especially if it's a more complex enthusiast type vehicle. My subjective experience is most gremlins are gone by 10-20K miles.
I am having the exact same problems with mine right now. We are in the same area, same time frame, a previous FJ owner, and I also have a Sarge Green Sahara 4xe! Lol
My first coolant pump was switched out right after Thanksgiving, now same code for coolant pump B was thrown after I brought it home and charged it for one day. I am stuck in a rental until it is fixed, but they are telling me the parts are all back ordered and have zero time frame of when they will come in.
I hope you get better news than me!

Are they allowing you to drive it until the parts are in?!
According to Jeep Cares, the pump is supposed to arrive at the dealer today, but I don’t have a lot of confidence in that based on comments that the dealer made. The dealer did say that I could drive the Jeep, but they had a loaner so I took it. I figured better safe than sorry. There are issues mentioned in this forum and the JL forum of Jeeps just shutting down while people are driving. I hope that these things are not related. Also wondering about your scenario where two pumps fail at the same time. Seems like quite the coincidence unless this is software related rather than mechanical. I hope Jeep is on this as I really don’t want to go through the hassle of unloading my brand new 4xe and finding a new car in this crazy environment.

As an update, the dealer texted me yesterday saying the part would be in from Detroit "later this week." Hopefully, I will have the vehicle back by this weekend. Not looking forward to the inevitable breaking of another pump. C'mon FCA just send out a recall if this many people are having issues...

Since they forced me into the schedule, they just kinda took my car. They didn't mention anything about me being able to drive it.

How many miles did you have on your vehicle with the first failure and the failure now?
I’m joining the club! Got my Sting Gray Rubi last week. 50 miles in for CEL. Fuses were fine. Gas cap sealed. Dealer read my code today and it was “P0C74-00 motor Electronics Coolant pump B Control performance”. They reset it and we’re going to see what happens.

10 miles prior to CEL I got “Electric Mode Unavailable. Cabin cooling or heating”.

From reading the forums this has been going on for 6 months. I’ll schedule service appt and have alerted Jeep Cares. Like many, just pretty annoyed and disheartened that I dropped 65 and dealing with this.
