Rattle noise in front end/engine compartment

9789 Views 136 Replies 27 Participants Last post by  Dougeast
I happily took delivery of our new 2022 GC 4xe Trailhawk last week and have loved every minute with it. Unfortunately, I'm noticing a faint but persistent rattle in the front right side at slow speeds and on bumpy pavement/roads. It doesn't seem to be the suspension as large bumps and potholes make normal road noise whereas the rattle sounds like a rock rolling and rattling in a plastic jar. I've checked under the hood and nothing is loose. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Will likely bring it to the dealer for inspection next week...

Update...my dealer has not given mine back either as it is still not fixed after 3 days so a rental over the weekend it is for me. Unfortunately, they say the clunk is getting worse and they do not yet have a definitive repair. They completely removed the sway bar (including disconnect unit) and took it for a drive and the clunk persists...that tells us that my issue is not related to the sway bar itself. They have created a ticket with Jeep Star Link for a factory engineer to assess the issue, including coming to the dealership to personally assess his/herself.

To be fair, I am very satisfied with the dealership shop experience...the staff are knowledgeable and have top notch customer service. They are just as frustrated with the issue as I am however they remain perplexed. They're with me that this is not normal and should not be acceptable for a brand new vehicle.

The dealer has suggested contacting Jeep [email protected], please continue to follow this thread and know I'll be PM'ing you. Good luck to others with the same/similar issue.
appreciate the update. Please let the engineer to place/write findings in whatever system they use for the rest of us having the same issues.

My 22 JGC TH is at the dealer now for what I think is front right clunk. Does it regardless of big/small bump or weather so basically anytime the control arm move’s it’s a light clunking. Only 500 miles so we’ll see what they say and report back.

Has a power steering update as well which I thought was odd.

Update 1: dealer said there was a TSB for the sway bar links to be tightened and they did it but the noise is still there. They need to keep it until the weekday because their weekend techs are basically oil change folks and super young techs.

Final Update:
CONCERN1: REPAIRS & CONCERN
CS WHEN GOING OVER ANY BUMP NO MATTER HOW SMALL HEAR A LIGHT CLUNKING FROM RIGHT FRONT SIDE.
SUSPECTS LOOSE BALL JOINT. SAYS NOISE EASY TO PRODUCE. ANY TIME FRONT RIGHT CONTROL ARM MOVES CAN HEAR THE NOISE. CHECK AND ADVISE.
Caused by: Tech found bulletin Relation to Sway Bar links. (02-003-23). Technician tightened sway bar links
LOP = 0220109B (.4)

Tech performed Test drive. Vehicle operating as other like vehicle with trail hawk suspension.
Chrysler Engineers are working on improved repairs. But vehicle operating normally at this time.

Power steering on these are electric (reason for a software update) not the old style pump that used to be run by the pulleys off the front of the engine.

I meant because it’s only 1-2 months old so they should have done the update unless it just came out.

yeah...they come out all the time....just because its new from the factory doesn't mean it got the update...it could have been sitting there at the factory like mine was for months waiting on some chip part and updates came out...and it still wasn't updated. If my vehicle is working well and I have no issues...I really don't want the update....at least for a few months or more after it comes out...until they are sure its good...with my luck the update usually causes more issues than helps make things better. There are many updates to the update....like the second or third....then I may chance the update.

We also have the dreaded clunking in our 2022 Jeep GC Trailhawk 4xe. We live on a washboard gravel road so we have been hearing it for months as we go uphill at 15-20 mph. Took into to dealership twice and was told it was normal road noise. We tried to disconnect sway bar to see if it would help eliminate the clunk but we could not get sway bar reconnected. It was sounding an alarm at speeds over 20 mph. We took it to the local jeep dealer and it has been there for 12 days and they cannot get it out of limp mode. It has been beyond frustrating....Jeep please get this problem diagnosed and fixed while we still have warranty coverage.

Ya I have basically the same issue. Also was thinking it was sway bar related and also couldn't disconnect. I should be hearing about the repairs today or tomorrow... I hope.
I actually posted this complaint on carcomplaints. See if it goes anywhere.

Posted my final update in the quoted comment. Seems to have fixed about 90% of the issue and apparently this is known to Chrysler Engineers and dealer told me they could even see this being a recall. There’s no guarantee the sway bar links won’t loosen up again but for now it’s improved.

Thanks! You seem to have a great dealership

They’re ok, not too many complaints and they try. They did scratch up my center console this visit so they’re replacing that now.
My old dealership in Colorado Springs was the best though.
I was supposed to get my vehicle back today but now they say Monday as they are still waiting for the sway bar. Anyone know how much this part is as its electronic? I can't find much info on it.

How did they do that messing with the something under the car. Picked mine up a few weeks ago had a door ding in the driver door. They tried to tell me it was there. Showed them video. Every time I drop my car off I take videos of inside and out. I hate dealerships.

Looks like someone had one of those big coffee mugs with a handle and the handle moved around and scratched the piss out of back of the holder. I also had some dried coffee in the holder and I have NEVER used them. Isn’t the first time I’ve had weirdness with this dealer but the first damage. Feels like I gotta do the rental car thing and have a walk around with the service advisor next time. Excuse the pollen/dust in the photo

One I’d be pissed why is someone’s coffee cup in my car. Glad they are replacing it. Did they give you any problem saying it wasn’t them?
By the way I hate that piano black it scratches so easy. Been using make up brushes to lightly clear pollen.

No problems, they asked for a couple photos including one of the entire console so I texted them to a manager. Few minutes later they texted back saying they ordered a replacement. Curious if it’s one piece or not so we’ll see.

OK, here's my update after my GC 4xe TH has been sleeping at the dealer for nearly two weeks...after my dealer opened a Star Tech case with Jeep factory engineers, things slowed waaaay down with added back and forth with the engineers. They additionally replaced the lower control arms (prior parts included both front struts, sway bar links and tension links in addition to torquing all suspension parts) and the rattle persisted. They removed the entire sway bar and drove it with the noise persisting, confirming it was NOT the sway bar or sway bar disconnect system. More time with engineer back/forth. Finally they have determined the clunking is coming from the front drive shafts, which makes sense to me as my noise is muted/non-existent until the vehicle warms up with some miles driven. Apparently, they took the front drive shafts out then went for a drive (essentially rear wheel drive only) and no clunk. Beyond me why front drive shafts have problems after a few thousand miles and those miles being only pavement pounding...chalking it up to bad factory parts and/or poor assembly the day mine was rolling down that part of the line. Parts on order and I should be able to pick it up this week...fingers crossed that this fixes it for good and it drives as designed, like a new vehicle should rather than a 100K mile rattle wagon!

Wow if they have a drive shaft clunking from almost Day 1 that isn't good. They said mine was 90% better but that they were going to replace the sway bar which now is supposed to be tomorrow. Ill believe it when it happens. I am not confident it will no longer clunk after but I might give up on it. Is this driveshaft Trailhawk specific or Off-Road package specific? It seems the only people complaining are Trailhawk owners and a few Overland owners.

quadralift only?
So service department called me and said the part didn't get delivered yesterday. They keep saying its coming and it doesn't. Now they claim they can't find one anywhere but yet is supposed to ship on the 8th. I told them I will live with the clunk until you actually get the part in so please put it back together and let me pick it up and we can schedule another appointment. So frustrated.
