Rattle noise in front end/engine compartment

9513 Views 136 Replies 27 Participants Last post by  Dougeast
I happily took delivery of our new 2022 GC 4xe Trailhawk last week and have loved every minute with it. Unfortunately, I'm noticing a faint but persistent rattle in the front right side at slow speeds and on bumpy pavement/roads. It doesn't seem to be the suspension as large bumps and potholes make normal road noise whereas the rattle sounds like a rock rolling and rattling in a plastic jar. I've checked under the hood and nothing is loose. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Will likely bring it to the dealer for inspection next week...

If you could give us an update in a month or so- would be great! Thanks to all in the thread
Sure thing, I bounce in and out on here. Drive to work this morning was fantastic. I don't even recall when the vehicle sounded like this. Maybe my quick test drive before taking it home? It sounds solid as it should. Here is what was replaced. I guess they changed my battery too.

Was browsing different forums this morning and found another thread where the OP says replacing front stabilizer bar fixed the clunking/knocking sound in the front in Grand Cherokee Trailhawk WL - WL 2022 JGC Trailhawk multiple issues starting at 800 miles. Specifically post #37 (WL 2022 JGC Trailhawk multiple issues starting at 800 miles). This is not 4xe though, but I guess the suspension should be more or less similar between the two? Maybe we all need to have our sway bars replaced :)

I was out and about driving Friday afternoon and like always after about 20 minutes of driving in 90 degree weather the clunking sound was very loud and prominent. I happened to be close to my Jeep dealer so I stopped by and asked the service manager if a tech could go for a quick ride since the car was having the issue right now. A tech jumped in the passenger seat and right as I left the driveway and turned right onto the road, “CLUNK”. The tech almost jumped out of his seat and his eyes were wide open like he was scared lol. We continued at slow speeds through the back roads for 5 minutes and my car clunked over every small bump. The tech kept saying it sounds like something is loose but I kept insisting saying “this is a major issue every Trailhawk owner is having, and it seems like it’s the sway bar”. He wanted me to leave the car with them right then and there but they couldn’t give me a loaner. So I’m dropping it off with them Tuesday morning. At least they have now witnessed the issue and acknowledge it’s not normal. Hoping they come to the same conclusion as UniSonBBS’s dealer and replace the sway bar and end links.

Really needs to be a TSB at this point- so we don’t have to convince every single dealer

That sounds exactly like what's happening to me...let me know what they find.

Thank you for sharing your post. We were so glad that the service tech could hear our clunk also...we will set up another appointment and will definitely share this info to help with the diagnosis and hopefully a repair soon!
Update on my Jeep GC 4xe Trailhawk that I dropped of at the dealer Tuesday morning for the sway bar issue. The tech who rode with me on the test drive last Friday and heard the clunking for himself was assigned the car. He found the STAR case someone else mentioned on here that says to re-tighten the swaybar end links to a higher torque value, and supposedly after an extended test drive (25 miles total of freeway driving), they say the clunking is now gone. I'm not holding my breath until I see for myself though.

The BIGGER issue now though is while the tech was working on my car, he noticed a leak coming from the transmission. There hasn't been any drips or fluid leaking on to my epoxy garage floors, but according to them there's quite a bit of fluid pooling and collecting on the undertray. They contacted Jeep engineering and opened a STAR case about this, and engineering had them partially drop the transmission and take photos of the leak. Engineering approved the replacement of the entire transmission, which has now been ordered. They're putting my car back together and it will be released to me tomorrow, and once the new transmission arrives I'll make an appointment to bring it back and have it swapped out. Fun times!

Do you know what the higher torque value is?

I think they said it was around 90ft lbs? I can ask tomorrow when I pickup my car. I’m also gonna ask for more information about the transmission leak.

Last week I took my Trailhawk in for the same reason. I was told that it was a bad air strut but there are none in the stock anywhere in the country. There is not ETA on when they will be and I was placed on a waiting list. Meanwhile, I can drive it but to avoid towing with it. I have a boat and camper, and weekend trips every weekend this summer. At this point this will be my first and last Jeep I will ever buy.

certainly the last jeep with the Quadralift. Can think of no reason to pay for it either.

I forgot to mention that I did find the knocking to be a little less if keep the height in aero mode.

Any update on the over-torque ft/lbs on the sway bar links? Hope your transmission issue is getting addressed too...

Here's the notes about the TSB 02-003-23 which says to re-torque the sway bar end links to 91ft/lbs. From my short period of time with the car back this definitely feels like a "90% fix" as the previous person on here said. The clunking does seem mostly gone now. I think I still hear it occasionally, but maybe I'm just paranoid now and I am always listening for any type of noise lol. I also haven't driven it for an extended period on the freeway yet to fully test it. Still hoping they come up with a more permanent fix and issue a recall.

Thanks for the details...I have a call into my dealer to try this as a last ditch hail mary as everything else (long list in prior post) has either failed or only marginally improved the clunk. Apparently there is a TSB for upper control arms on a known issue with those for some GC Trailhawk 4xe but that did not help my case...

Hi Kate,

Going to take my GC TH in for the recall that was just issued and will ask them to look at the clunk too. Is there a service notice or other internal info that I can refer them to on this issue?

Thanks,

Doug
