I was minutes away from purchasing a brand new 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe Trailhawk. I had everything ironed out with the dealer and hopped in for a test drive. When I started the Jeep, I saw the message "Power Surge on USB Hub Detected" on the display. (See photo)

The radio wouldn't do anything. I couldn't load any apps. I couldn't dismiss the warning message and the radio periodically rebooted. The dealer took it back to their service area and they couldn't fix it. The salesman told me that the master techs work Mon - Fri so they would fix it Monday and give me a call.

Here's my worry... I've read many horror stories about electrical issues in the new Grand Cherokees. Is this one of those issues? Is this just a bellwether for future problems? Has anyone else seen this same issue?

At this point, I'm not sure if I should look for a 2023 model instead, or if I'm overreacting and I should just let the dealership fix it then purchase it? I really like the vehicle and worked out a great deal on it, I'm just worried that I'll be plagued with years of issues.

Thoughts? What would you do?

Sounds like someone plugged something into a USB port that shouldn't have been plugged in there, probably not a vehicle defect but user error of some kind. But for sure you'd want that fixed before taking delivery of a new vehicle.

Buy the car. Whatever it is, it will be fixed under warranty. Use it to bargain for a better price. And as others have said, it is a condition that is likely caused by an abnormal Wattage request through a USB port - let's see if USB-C is equipped for Power Delivery for my Suface 9 Pro type of problems.

I hear ya. But in this case, nothing was plugged into any USB ports. I wonder if the person prepping the vehicle for delivery had their phone plugged in or something and that made it go haywire before I hopped in it?
I suppose you’re right tho, an issue with the USB doesn’t mean there’s any issue with the rest of the vehicle.

Doubtful a cell phone would cause that but I could see a laptop or something larger that uses USB. Doubt the dealer will give you a deal since they’ll just sell it to the next person since they’ll have to redo the paperwork regardless but who knows. Maybe get some free accessories out of it…

Dealer said it was a bad USB Hub module. They ordered a new one and will have it fixed tomorrow. I'm looking forward to going back and test driving it again. Hopefully everything is ironed out!!!

I had something similar in another car, it was a shorted usb cable I was using. The difference was that it would come back. to normal. when unplugged. In your case, might have affected the module, or it was a defective unit. That being said, most brands have reliability issues with a few exceptions, Jeep is not much worse than others, but not a shining star either. You do have warranty and hope the parts. are available... that is the best you can expect this days...

They fixed it by replacing the usb hub. I picked it up yesterday. Everything works great. I’m kinda blown away by how many electronics are in this vehicle. I could sit in the driveway for hours playing with the settings.
