Transmission Replacement

Been loving my 2023 4xe Sahara but was disappointed to learn it needs a completely new transmission after about 5k miles (and that the initial ETA is mid-June). Dealer said it was an issue where some transmissions just rolled off the line warped and said this is the second one they’ve seen like this. Looking through the forum, I’ve seen a few similar posts. Wondering if anyone else has had a similar issue with their 2023 as time goes on? Thanks!

Yes they are!

BUT given the gravity of an expensive purchase not performing, the company has an obligation to be responsive to major failures like a transmission loss in a brand new car. Not to have created availability of replacement parts for an item that appears to be prone to failure is very disrespectful of the people who purchase the vehicle. It's not like you bought socks that were mis-sewn and are asked to wait an extended period of time for it to be made right... and if it were, you can easily go out and pick up more socks.

Thank God that they don't manufacture artificial heart valves.

Just came across this post and wondering if my 2022 GC 4xe that was built at the end of September is part of the same "batch" as your 2023 4xe Sahara. I took my GC 4xe in for service and while the tech was working on the car he noticed the transmission had a leak coming from the left/center according to his notes. Jeep had them take photos of both the leak and the part/serial number, and after receiving those they instantly approved a new transmission, which like you has an ETA of mid-June.

I don’t off-hand but I will check and update the reply. I’m still waiting for the repair to be complete and I’ve been really disappointed in the support from @JeepCares , who despite making several promises to call me back and update me (and I have called them at least three times), have never once actually returned a call or provided any support.

1) Appreciate it and anxiously waiting for an update. I'm getting pretty nervous about mine.

2) I haven't had the gasket replaced yet. My dealer said it's fine to drive for now and I'm waiting for a loaner vehicle before I drop it off. The 4xe is my family's only car.

3) Has your vehicle been in the shop since may? Did they give you a loaner? This is frustrating to hear about Jeep cares.

1) Still looking for the date… VIN confirmed the year but my paperwork is all in the Jeep itself at the dealership. FWIW, I bought it in late October 2022 and it was a relatively recent arrival to the dealership at the time (within one month).

2) They did replace the gasket on mine when I first brought it in when I noticed the leak in April.

3) I was able to get a loaner when I dropped it off on May, which has been critical. My dealership did right by me with that (even if it’s not a PHEV… it’s a Gladiator so that has been a cool change of pace).

Mine has 678 miles.. had it a total of 5 days.. about to make the 2nd payment, needs transmission due to hairline crack in the case... coming up on 21 days OUT of the vehicle... estimate delivery for. transmission is October... Jeep cares case opened last week, but no word from them on anything.. This sucks all the way around... I did get a loaner from the dealer, but this isn't the dealer's issue.. this is Jeep's issue.. they should make it right.. I'm NOT waiting until October...

I have a case pending w jeep cares and dealership filed w star. I need a new transmission per dealership. Not getting anywhere w anyone moving this forward. Really bad customer service for a $74,000 vehicle that is 4 months old. Very disappointed in anyone giving any .... dealer says waiting on jeep to respond and that they can't so anything until someone gets off their ass and does something to move this forward.

Hello, have seen others here with transmission problems with their 4xe. Looking for some feedback if possible. 2023 Rubicon 4xe, started surging while slowing down, shaking and knocking at idle. Electric motor actually shut down while driving on the road even though it was fully charged. Vehicle has been in the dealership for over a month. Jeep’s STAR center keeps having the dealership run test, replace parts and more test. Evidently they do not know what is wrong with it. Called Customer Care and filed a case with them. Filed for a buy back since they can’t fix it. After several complaints was advised that they were replacing the transmission. Find out the transmission is coming from Fred Jones, which means remanufactured. Not happy, specially since the case manager told me it was a new transmission from a dealer named Fred Jones, can’t find that dealer, but I did sell Fred Jones reman motors and transmissions while working at a Ford dealership. Now they are going to put a remanufactured transmission in a 6 moth old vehicle with less than 2500 miles. All I hear from Customer Care is we understand your concerns, but that seems to be lip service, and can’t get a supervisor. Any similar issues or experiences out there. Any advice or contact info would be appreciated.

For those waiting for a transmission, the replacement for our 6 month old 4xe arrived today. It is a remanufactured transmission from Fred Jones. Can not get a call back from Jeep about this even though I have an open case for this. If you are having transmission issues and they say they will replace the transmission on a new vehicle find out what you are getting. The dealership verified today that it is a remanufactured unit. I believe the Jeep wave from Jeep has become one with only an elevated middle finger.

As long as the warranty stands as when you bought it - shouldn't be a big deal. I can see two sides - you have a used vehicle with some miles - but want a new transmission. I get that, but the use of such transmissions has been going on since we had our Cherokee in the 90s. Even back then you got a reman, not new, if your transmission went south under warranty.
The problem I have is - I've been in the industry for decades, and i've seen remanufactured stuff that's just plain CRAP. Knurled recesses for bearings and the bearings end up spinning anyway, knurled shafts to hold bearings and the bearings come loose, parts over or undersized, even mismatched parts in some cases.

I'm honestly torn on this topic.
If they fully warrant it as if it was a brand new vehicle, fine - but I also might ask for a bit more "warranty" should that reman unit go south.

Well if it was a used vehicle with mileage on it and I were into an extended warranty I would expect a remanufactured transmission. We have had this vehicle for 6 months, actually 5 since the dealer has had it for over a month. It does not even have 2300 miles on it. I would expect a new transmission in a new vehicle. I have about 20 years in the industry and have always advocated new parts for new vehicles. Again if it was into an extended warranty or has signs of neglect, different story. Sold Fred Jones reman parts, don’t really want them in my vehicle.

I don’t understand this Jeep cares program, I opened a case up, because STAR had the dealership doing test for a month with no answers. I had a case manager, who after I voiced my concerns with the vehicle and elevated the case handed me of to another case manager. That case manager lied about the transmission and is not responding to messages, or voice messages. Maybe vacation? You can’t get to someone other than your case worker. I have asked at the FCA number for a supervisor and was told case managers are above supervisors? I am feeling that Jeep Cares are two words that should not be spoken in the same breath.

It's been a full week since I last heard from "JeepCares" - and that's when they told me I'd be getting a follow-up call on Wednesday - that's now last Wednesday.
Apparently the dealer has has some trouble getting communication as well.

i sent the service manager a polite email asking if he'd heard anything.
A few minutes later he called me and said the regional tech rep and STAR both agreed the next step is indeed transmission replacement.
In his words "they are going to release a transmission for your Jeep".
But he said he had no idea on timing, when, etc.
He did say that since Jeep would be paying for the loaner, it's in their best interest to keep things moving along but then - a loaner vehicle daily rate isn't a big deal to a company like FCA.

I purchased a 2024 4xe wrangler Sahara received in September had a transmission leak at 500km they replaced the transmission seal twice and still leaked. Now they see they need to replace the transmission assembly. It only has 1200 km on it. I’m not a happy camper! I read this is a problem with other jeep wranglers. My last vehicle was a 2020 jeep Sahara which I loved but gave to my daughter who needed a vehicle. Now I know i should have done more research.

Don't feel too bad, my experience with my 2024 Wrangler 4XE lasted 1 week. Need new Transmission and would turn completely off at stop lights for 3-5 minutes. I can only imagine what the people behind me at the traffic lights were thinking as they saw the brand new Wrangler that didn't even have plates yet just sitting there...am currently pursuing Lemon Law options. Bout it on 1/3/24 drove it for a week then first available appointment was 1/24/24, and no resolution yet as of today 2/9/24. The dealership is not helpful and I am having to work with Jeep Cares...

I would think that by now, with the numbers of transmissions being replaced, those like ours and many others here, Jeep would be on top of this and there'd be no argument at all - in fact, there should be a TSB or other document telling a dealership if you see this, then do this. It's been over a year of this BS going on and still dealers and even Jeep themselves fight this stuff.

My 24’ PHEV needed a new transmission after 175 miles. Bought on 2/2, it’s been at the dealership since 2/13. Service manager today told me it’s ready and a remanufactured transmission was installed. I’m struggling to accept a reman on a vehicle with less than 200 miles. @JeepCares is a complete waste of time. After waiting 2 weeks for my manager to call me, she told me there’s nothing wrong with the car and was closing the case - even though there was an active Star case at that time. Dealership offered to pick up payments while it sat for 6 weeks, but they’ve quickly gone quiet and no longer respond. @Jimma2 @Marktroy19 @Yawnie'sPapa @KTT Any updates on your situation?

You aren't going to get "new" anything when it comes to engines and transmissions, and frankly, they carry the same warranty and hopefully the issues that caused the first to fail have been resolved with the remans.
I don't know of any company that puts new engines or transmissions in.
I have yet to see anyone who has had a transmission replaced have repeated leak issues, and all that I've seen were reman.

Wow, that 4 months makes me feel lucky. The back and forth between service manager, Jeep STAR and their regional technical rep took almost as long as the replacement itself.
Once they had the transmission in hand (or on a pallet) it took only 3 or 4 days (but I suspect the SM called all hands on deck by that time)
It took a few days, no more than a week, to get it.
If I recall correctly, they had it for less than a month total, start to finish.
That was around last November. It's been totally dry to this point, no issues at all, functionally perfect as well. No hiccups, no mistakes.
